MGCCC pitches OT shutout

Mississippi Gulf Coast's stout defense in regulation got even better in overtime at Meridian on Monday, pitching a five-minute shutout for a 61-51 victory.

"Defensively, we were rock solid," Gulf Coast coach Wendell Weathers said. "We gave up 51 points in regulation, and they hit two threes in the last minute or else they wouldn't have got to 50. I thought our defense was really good."

It's the eighth time this season the Bulldogs (17-3, 9-2 MACJC South) have given up 60 or fewer points. Their 62.5 points allowed per game is fourth-best in NJCAA Division I.

Keevon Oney (So., Gulfport/Gulfport) led Gulf Coast with 25 points, and DaJuan Moorer (So., Pensacola, Fla./Pensacola Catholic) had 10.

"He was good," Weathers said. "He was back to slashing and getting to the rim. He probably had three buckets on steals that turned into layups. Every time we got the ball on a handoff or loop going toward the rim, he got to the rim."

Weathers warned the Bulldogs of complacency heading into Monday. His team had won the first meeting by 30 points, but found themselves trailing 27-25 at halftime.

Gulf Coast got help Monday in trying to get a division title. East Central upset Jones in Decatur, putting the Bulldogs and Bobcats in a tie for second in the South, a game behind Pearl River.

MGCCC travels to Poplarville on Thursday with the chance to pull into a tie atop the division. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
