Oney’s 24 leads MGCCC to win

Keevon Oney poured in 24 points to lead Mississippi Gulf Coast to its third straight win to open the season, a 94-62 victory at Baton Rouge.

"He had about as good a night as you could ask him to have," Bulldogs coach Wendell Weathers said. "If he can duplicate that three times out of four, we're going to be really good. Keevon was really good tonight offensively and defensively."

Three other Bulldogs joined Oney (So., Gulfport/Gulfport) in double figures. Mykah Brown (Fr., Petal /Petal) had 14 points, LaRaymond Spivery had 13 and Phoenix Ford added 10.

Gulf Coast scored the first 12 points of the game and never looked back in picking up its first NJCAA Region 23 win.

"I thought we played really well," Weathers said. "I told them before the game started we needed to duplicate the second half at Bishop State for 40 minutes, and they just about did that."

Gulf Coast is off until it hosts the MGCCC Thanksgiving Classic. The Bulldogs play Baton Rouge again Nov. 19 in Perkinston and Southern-Shreveport the following day.

"We're going to add stuff defensively we need to add," Weathers said. "We'll put in some new stuff to try to make them stay focused. We're just working to get better."
