Jackson’s 12th-inning walk-off bomb beats Delgado
PERKINSTON — Down two in extra innings and down to the last out in extra innings, Mississippi Gulf Coast found a way to win on a chilly Thursday at Ken "Curly" Farris Field.
Three straight hits, the last a walk-off two-run homer by Dom Jackson, lifted Gulf Coast to a 7-6 win over Delgado in 12 innings.
"It shows this team doesn't quit," Gulf Coast coach Zach Allen said. "There's been times we've been punched in the face, but we don't give up. You get down to your last out, and the two guys we really rely on haven't had a great day, but they go triple-home run. That's the kind of guys we need, and we trust those guys at that time."
Down 6-4 after the Dolphins scored twice with two outs in the top of the inning, Colby Wilson (So, Saucier/D'Iberville) started the rally with an infield single. That brought up Kaden Irving (So, Gautier/Gautier) with Jackson (So, Gulf Breeze, Fla./Gulf Breeze) on deck, guys who were a combined 1-for-10 on the day.
Irving hit a ball that the center fielder could barely get his glove on, and he wound up on third in a 6-5 game.
Jackson, who said he was just trying to get bat to ball, put a charge into an 0-1 fastball to deep center. The center fielder tried to rob it but came up short.
"It's a special feeling, especially with this group," he said. "There's nobody else I'd rather win with in the world. It feels good to do it with people who care so much."
James Vines (Fr, Clinton, La./Silliman Institute) gave the Bulldogs five innings of no-hit ball in his start, striking out eight. He left up 2-0, but Delgado (4-6) scored three in the sixth and another in the seventh.
After the seventh-inning stretch, Keilon Parnell (So., Pascagoula/Pascagoula) singled through the right side of the infield to drive in a pair of runs and tie the game.
Walker Seaman (Fr, Grand Bay, Ala./Mobile Christian) gave four innings of one-hit work to get the game to the 11th. He struck out five batters, and the Bulldogs finished with 16 K's
"We pitched it really well," Allen said. "Our pitchers keep us in it. That's five or six games in a row where they really give us an opportunity to win. If they keep pitching like that, our offense will come around. It's going to be pretty good."
Wilson, Jackson and Brandon Coakley (Fr, Covington, La./Covington) had
Gulf Coast (9-5) will host Jones at 11 a.m. and Pearl River at 5 p.m. on Wednesday in a split doubleheader at Farris Field. Those two teams will play each other in the middle game.
