PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast welcomed a Reid State team playing its first-ever games as a program Tuesday, sending the Lions home on the wrong end of a split at Ken "Curly" Farris Field.
The Bulldogs won the first game 18-8 in eight innings before edging RSTC 4-2 in the second.
"Some of the arms threw really well," Gulf Coast coach Zach Allen said. "Tyler West came in in relief in that first game and just really filled the zone up. That was huge for us.
"Game 2, the environment wasn't great. You have to build your own. Sam Marsh and Walker Seaman really kept us in that game, pounding the zone."
West (Fr, Vancleave/Vancleave) pitched four innings of middle relief, striking out four and allowing two runs on two hits. Kaden Irving (So, Gautier/Gautier) had three hits, including a two-run homer, and three RBI.
Landon Holliman (So, Hattiesburg/Sumrall), Brandon Coakley (Fr, Covington, La./Covington), Jacob Palazzo (So, Biloxi/Gulfport) and Layton Eder (Fr, Vancleave/Vancleave) had two hits each. Dom Jackson (So, Gulf Breeze, Fla./Gulf Breeze) drove in three runs.
Marsh (So, Monroe, La./Neville) allowed just three hits in a four-inning start. Only one of the runs was earned. Walker Seaman (Fr, Grand Bay, Ala./Mobile Christian) was dominant in his three innings, striking out five to earn the save.
The Bulldogs managed only three hits but scored a couple of runs on balks. Keondre Fields (So, Nesbit/Magnolia Heights) had the only RBI on a sacrifice fly. Tanner Ladner (So, Pass Christian/Hancock) had two hits, and Irving tripled.
Gulf Coast is off for a week, with the next game scheduled for Feb. 11 at Perk. Coastal Alabama-South will visit for one nine-inning game starting at 3 p.m.
