Ladner’s dramatic grand slam not enough for Bulldogs

Mississippi Gulf Coast got a grand slam from Tanner Ladner to help erase a big late deficit, but Nunez beat the Bulldogs with a two-out RBI single to close out a sweep in Chalmette, La., on Friday.

Gulf Coast scored five times in the seventh inning of the second game to tie the game, but the Bulldogs lost 13-12 on the walk-off hit. The Pelicans won the first game 5-1.

Ladner drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth to make the score 12-7, then followed a Dawson Hall (So, Gulfport/Gulfport) bases-loaded walk in the seventh with his blast.

There were seven home runs in the game, including by Gulf Coast's Dom Jackson (So, Gulf Breeze, Fla./Gulf Breeze) and Layton Eder (Fr, Vancleave/Vancleave), and all were to center field. Nunez plays at Chalmette High School, where straightaway center measures about 315 feet.

In the first game, Landon Holliman (So, Hattiesburg/Sumrall) had a solo home run for the Bulldogs' only run.

Kaden Irving and Jacob Palazzo (So, Biloxi/Gulfport) had two hits, and Naji Cain (Fr, Columbia/Columbia) had a double.

Gulf Coast is right back in action Saturday with a doubleheader against No. 22 Lansing at Perk. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
