Merritt wins MACJC Player of the Week
PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast defensive lineman Brian Merritt has been named MACJC Defensive Player of the Week.
Merritt, a freshman from Colquitt, Ga., had 11 total tackles in the 55-24 win over Southwest at Homecoming on Saturday. He had 4.5 tackles for loss, including 2.5 sacks.
He'll be back on the field Thursday when Gulf Coast travels to East Central for a big MACJC South showdown. Kickoff in Decatur is set for 6:30 p.m.
Merritt is the second consecutive Gulf Coast player to win the award, following defensive back Jackie Matthews last week. Linebacker Mike Smith won it earlier in the season.
Merritt is eligible for the NJCAA Defensive Player of the Week award, which will be announced Wednesday.
