No. 5 Lansing visits Farris Field

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast expects to face stiff opposition in its weekend doubleheader at Ken "Curly" Farris Field.

No. 5 Lansing, which finished fifth at the NJCAA Division II Championship last season, visits Saturday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m., and the games will be streamed at https://mgcccbulldogs.com/watch

The Michigan team is just getting the season starting, making a swing through the South starting Friday in Meridian. The Stars will play 12 games between March 3 and 12. 

The Bulldogs start MACCC play in a week. Gulf Coast split a doubleheader with Lansing last season, one of just 11 losses for the Stars.

Last Time Out

  • MGCCC lost 7-2 to Jones and 3-2 to No. 1 Pearl River on Wednesday in Ellisville.
  • Lansing beat Parkland 4-3 and Lake Land 8-7 in Champaign, Ill., on Feb. 25, its only games before this Southern swing.

Previous Meeting

On March 4, 2022, Gulf Coast bounced back from a 10-8 loss in the opener against Lansing to win the second 14-12.

  • Gulf Coast is fourth in the country in home runs with 22 and ninth with a .553 slugging percentage.
  • Sean Smith (So., Pascagoula/Pascagoula) and Charlie Keller (Fr., Mobile, Ala./Mobile Christian) are tied for second in the NJCAA with eight home runs. Smith is tied for fifth with 25 RBI and is second among all batters with more than 40 at bats in slugging (1.116) and fifth in hitting (.488).
  • Gulf Coast leads the MACCC in slugging (.553), is second in on-base percentage (.455) and fourth in hitting (.321).
  • Smith leads the MACCC in home runs (8), RBI (25), hitting (.488) and slugging (1.116).
  • Keller is tied for the MACCC lead with 8 home runs and is third in RBI (18). He is third in slugging (.905).
