Bulldogs split with Bears

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast put itself in position to have to rally in both halves of its baseball doubleheader against Southwest Mississippi on Tuesday.

The Bulldogs came back from down three to win the first game 10-7 but found a five-run hole to deep to climb out of in the second, falling 6-4 at Ken "Curly" Farris Field.

Noah Nicholson (So., Vancleave/Vancleave) kept Gulf Coast (12-14, 5-3 MACCC) in the first game with a yeoman's job of long relief. He went 5.2 innings, allowing three hits and two runs to get the win. He struck out three and didn't walk anybody for his first decision of the season.

Down 7-4 after six, Marc Stephens (Fr., Orange Beach, Ala./Gulf Shores) drove in two with a single and Jayden Mark (Fr., Petal/Petal) tied it with another single.

Stephens delivered a sacrifice fly in the eighth for the go-ahead run, and a Southwest error allowed another to score. Charlie Keller (Fr., Mobile, Ala./Mobile Christian) singled for the final margin, and Nate Anderson (So., Poplarville/Poplarville) pitched a scoreless ninth.

Charlie Olsen (Fr., Gulfport/Gulfport) had a three-run homer in the second. Keller had two hits.

Gulf Coast gave up a five-spot in the fifth of Game 2 to fall behind 6-0. The Bulldogs loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the inning, but got only a sacrifice fly from Sean Smith (So., Pascagoula/Pascagoula).

Blake Roberts (Fr., Petal/Petal) doubled in two runs in the sixth, and Stephens drove in another with a groundout.

Gulf Coast got the tying run to second base in the seventh but couldn't get anything else across. Roberts finished with three hits, including two doubles. Kade Carpenter (So., Vancleave/Vancleave) also doubled.

Southwest is 12-17, 2-6.

Gulf Coast is on the road Saturday, heading to Goodman. First pitch against Holmes is set for 2 p.m. The games will be streamed at https://holmesccmedia.com/.
