Sputtering starts doom MGCCC
Slow starts in both halves did in Mississippi Gulf Coast, which lost 83-70 to Holmes at Goodman on Thursday.
The Bulldogs (11-5, 1-1 MACCC) fell behind 20-5 in the first half before battling back to a 3-point deficit on a 3-pointer by Za'Kariyea Hamilton (Fr., Jackson/Clinton) just before the break.
Jabbari Barry (So., Lake Charles, La./Barbe) tied it at 34 with a 3-pointer right out of the locker room, but Holmes (14-1, 2-0) ran back out to a 14-point lead again.
Gulf Coast got it trimmed back down to 64-63 on another Hamilton 3-pointer with less than five minutes to play. A costly technical on the Bulldogs helped spur an 8-0 Holmes run to help close out the win.
Thomas Tangle (So., Standing Pine/Choctaw Central) led Gulf Coast with 18 points, with Hamilton and Barry adding 16 each. Larry Lee (So., Utica/Raymond) had 10 rebounds.
Gulf Coast shot 36.7 percent from the floor, hurt by 10 blocked shots by Holmes.
The Bulldogs are back in action Tuesday against Jones. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Dantzler Arena.
