Topps, McWhorter named Bulldogs of the Week

PERKINSTON — Tia Topps and Alex McWhorter have been named Bulldogs of the Week for Feb. 8-14.

Topps, a sophomore from Grenada, won both her tennis matches in a 9-0 Gulf Coast sweep at East Central. She teamed with Kasey Kent to win her No. 3 doubles match 8-1 and won 6-0, 6-3 in No. 6 singles.

McWhorter, a freshman from Mobile, hit a game-winning grand slam and had a save in two relief pitches during a 2-2 week for Mississippi Gulf Coast. McWhorter had hits in all four games, including the home run to beat East Central 7-4. He pitched the final two innings in that game, as well as picking up the save with a shutout inning in a 2-0 win at No. 12 Jones

Also nominated:

Sharisse Bridges, a freshman from Jackson, averaged 11.5 points and 6.5 rebounds last week. She had 18 points and eight rebounds while shooting 7-of-12 from the field against Pearl River.

Melvion Flanagan, a freshman guard from Alexandria, La., averaged 20.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals for Gulf Coast in a last-second loss at Southwest and six-point loss at No. 4 Pearl River.

Drake Henderson, a freshman from Greene County, scattered four hits in six shutout innings to be No. 12 Jones 2-0. He struck out seven and walked two at Ellisville.

Patrick Roth, a sophomore from Pascagoula, won both his matches in a 6-3 win at East Central. He teamed with Jackson Ward to win No. 3 doubles 8-1 and won at No. 3 singles 7-5, 6-2.
