Flowers, Catching named Bulldogs of the Week

PERKINSTON — Dawson Flowers and TK Catchings have been named Bulldogs of the Week for March 8-14.

Flowers, a freshman right-handed pitcher from Brookhaven, dominated No. 7 Pearl River while taking a no-decision in a 2-1 loss in extra innings. He allowed only four hits and didn't give up a run until the ninth inning, striking out five.

Catchings, a freshman forward from New Hebron, came off the bench and nearly averaged a double-double during a 1-1 week for Gulf Coast. She had 16 points and nine rebounds in a 55-52 loss at Southwest Mississippi. Catchings averaged nearly a point a minute in a 57-37 thrashing of Hinds scoring 16 points with eight rebounds in just 18 minutes of play.

Also nominated:

Tia Topps, a sophomore from Grenada, went 4-0 in an undefeated week for No. 13 Gulf Coast. She won her No. 3 doubles matches with different partners and won once at No. 5 and once at No. 6 singles.

Seth Macute, a freshman from Brisbane, Australia, won three matches for No. 13 Gulf Coast in a 2-0 week. He won both his No. 1 singles matches, including avenging a loss earlier in the season to East Central. Macute also won both matches in an 8-1 over Coastal Alabama.

Alex McWhorter, a freshman first baseman from Mobile, Ala., went 4-for-7 in a pair of tough losses at No. 7 Pearl River. He went 1-for-3 in a 2-1 loss in 10 innings, then had three hits in the nightcap, including a three-run homer into a powerful breeze.

Briana Shores, a sophomore third baseman/catcher from Richland, batted .455 with a pair of home runs in a 2-2 week for No. 2 Gulf Coast. She slugged her two home runs in a 10-3 loss to No. 15 (D-I) Pensacola State. Shores finished the week with five RBI. 

Melvion Flanagan, a freshman guard from Alexandria, La., played every minute of a 1-1 week for Gulf Coast, averaging a cool 30.0 points and 5.0 rebounds. He shot 42.1 percent from the 3-point arc. In a 69-67 win over Southwest Mississippi, he hit the game-winning layup in the final minute to finish with 27 points. He had 33 points in a 71-63 loss to Hinds.
