Barker, Topps named Bulldogs of the Week

PERKINSTON — Fabien Barker and Tia Topps have been named Bulldogs of the Week for May 3-9. 

Barker, a freshman forward from Madison, had a hat trick in a 7-0 win over Copiah-Lincoln and had a goal and an assist during Gulf Coast's second-half rally to beat Jones 3-2. The men's soccer team is tied for first in the South.

Tia Topps, a sophomore from Grenada, won the consolation final in No. 5 singles at the NJCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championship in Mesa, Ariz. The victory helped Gulf Coast finished 12th, the highest among MACCC schools.

Also nominated:  

Drake Henderson, a freshman left-hander from Sand Hill, threw a complete game in a 5-2 loss at No. 16 Itawamba. He struck out seven in eight innings, allowing three earned runs to give Gulf Coast all its pitching options for Day 2.

Ethan Coleman, a freshman from Lucedale, went 2-for-5 in the Bulldogs' Region 23 qualifying series at Itawamba. He had a double and an RBI, plus two walks.

Rakeya Travis, a sophomore shortstop from Poplarville, absolutely raked at the MACCC Tournament in Fulton. She batted .636 with hits in all four games. Her big game was a 3-for-3 performance against No. 9 Copiah-Lincoln with a triple, a home run and five RBI. 

Emaleigh Coates, a freshman from Lucedale, was a workhorse in the MACCC Tournament with appearances in all four games. She threw more than 400 pitches in compiling a 2-2 record.

Skyler Steede, a sophomore from Lucedale, made five saves to keep Gulf Coast in the contest in a 1-0 loss to No. 9 Jones and was part of a combined shutout of Copiah-Lincoln.

Katie Brown, a freshman from Picayune, had two goals and an assist for the Bulldogs in a 5-0 win over Copiah-Lincoln.
