Molero, Coates named Bulldogs of the Week

PERKINSTON — Pedro Molero and Emaleigh Coates have been named Bulldogs of the Week for April 5-11.

Molero, a freshman from Maracaibo, Venezuela, helped power No. 13 Gulf Coast to an 8-1 victory over No. 21 Itawamba which clinched at least a share of the MACCC championship. He and Clay Fudge dropped only two games at No. 2 doubles, and he won his No. 2 singles match 6-4, 6-1.

Coates, a freshman from Lucedale, was superb in winning 6-2 at No. 17 Southwest Mississippi. She struck out eight while walking only one and allowing five hits in her first complete game of the season. Only one of the runs was earned.

Also nominated:

Luke Welborn, a freshman from Locust Grove, Ga., batted .545 with a home run and five RBI in a 4-0 week for Mississippi Gulf Coast. His big game came in a 14-5 win at Holmes when he went 3-for-4 with a homer and four RBI. He also scored six times.

Drake Henderson, a freshman left-hander from Sand Hill, struck out 11 in a complete-game 6-3 win at Holmes. He allowed only two hits, two walks and two earned runs.

Kristian Jones, a freshman from Southaven, had a home run and six RBI to power No. 3 Gulf Coast to a sweep at No. 17 Southwest Mississippi. Her three-run homer in the seventh inning of the second game gave the Bulldogs the lead on the way to a 10-6 win. She went 3-for-4 in the 6-3 win in the opener, with RBI singles that twice gave MGCCC the lead.

Ashley Chelette, a freshman from Vancleave, won both her matches for No. 13 Gulf Coast in an 8-1 win over Itawamba. She teamed with Tia Topps to win at No. 3 doubles and won at No. 6 singles.

James Redmond, a sophomore from Bremen, Germany, had a goal in No. 6 Gulf Coast's 2-0 win at Holmes.

Isaiah Gore, a sophomore from Laurel, had a two-save shutout in No. 6 Gulf Coast's 2-0 win at Holmes.
