The Mississippi Gulf Coast women's tennis team swept to victory Friday in its first match of 2021. The Bulldogs blasted Itawamba 9-0 in Fulton.

Gulf Coast jumped on ICC right from the start.

"They came out ready to play from the beginning and never looked back," said MGCCC coach Sam Blackburn.

The Bulldogs didn't drop a set all day, but that doesn't mean there aren't things to clean up.

"We had a couple of matches that revealed things we need to work on, but with it being the first match it wasn't a surprise to me," Blackburn said. "I'm impressed with the way they handled things, especially in the close matches and pulled through. They showed maturity, which is exciting to see on the first day."

Blackburn got his first win as a first-year head coach after having a pair of matches postponed by weather.

"The first W is very satisfying and rewarding," he said. "It feels good to have been a little part of getting these men and women ready to win today. It's amazing to see the little bit of work I've gotten to do with them pay off. For how hard they've been working all year, this is very satisfying, for sure."
