Bulldogs earn bye in Region 23 Tourney

No. 13 Mississippi Gulf Coast dropped its final women's tennis match of the regular season, but the Bulldogs are already penciled in as the No. 2 seed after finishing as MACCC runners-up.

No. 12 Jones, which had already clinched the state championship, beat Gulf Coast 7-2 on Monday in Ellisville.

Gulf Coast finished the regular season 14-3 overall, 11-3 MACCC.

Krissy Georgieva (So., Epsom and Ewell High School/Sutton, England) and Kasey Kent (Fr., Ridgeland/Ridgeland) won their No. 1 doubles match 9-8. Tia Topps (So., Grenada/Grenada) claimed a point in No. 5 singles by winning 6-4, 7-5.

Gulf Coast has earned a bye into the NJCAA Region 23 semifinals. They are scheduled to play Friday. Official brackets will come out Tuesday, but the Bulldogs appear poised to get the No. 3 Hinds-No. 6 East Central winner from Thursday in the semifinals.

This year's Region 23 tournament will be played in a team format, with Jones earning the right to host by way of winning the women's MACCC title.
