Kawell leads Gulf Coast to second place after Round 1

Gulf Coast's George Kawell shot a first-round 70 to tie for second place after the first round of the 14^th annual Ron Marshall Spring Fling in Scottsboro, Ala. The Bulldogs are four shots back of team-leader Meridian, which shot even-par 288 at Goose Pond Colony's Lake Course.

Kawell is 2-under-par. Teammate Grant Motter is three shots back of Kawell, tied for 14^th. Phillip Hickam is another shot back tied for 22^nd.

Meridian's Austin Terrell leads the tournament after shooting 69.

The tournament, which is being played on the same course as the NJCAA championship will be, ends Saturday.
