Kawell leads Gulf Coast to second place after Round 1
Gulf Coast's George Kawell shot a first-round 70 to tie for second place after the first round of the 14th annual Ron Marshall Spring Fling in Scottsboro, Ala. The Bulldogs are four shots back of team-leader Meridian, which shot even-par 288 at Goose Pond Colony's Lake Course.
Kawell is 2-under-par. Teammate Grant Motter is three shots back of Kawell, tied for 14th. Phillip Hickam is another shot back tied for 22nd.
Meridian's Austin Terrell leads the tournament after shooting 69.
The tournament, which is being played on the same course as the NJCAA championship will be, ends Saturday.
