Bulldogs blitz field in first round at state

The Mississippi Gulf Coast golf team sizzled on the opening day of the MACJC state tournament, shooting 7-under to lead by six strokes at Lions Hill Country Club in Columbus.

 

The Bulldogs' Conner Entriken, a William Carey signee, fired a 4-under 68 to lead the field by one shot. Itawamba's Wilson Reeder is second, followed by East Central's Andrew Joiner and Gulf Coast's Phillip Hickam and George Kawell two off the pace.

 

Grant Motter, who led the state in scoring average heading into the tournament, is in an 11th-place tie at 1-over.

 

Danny De Los Santos is tied for 14th at 2-over.

 

Gulf Coast shot a 281, followed by East Mississippi six shots back. East Central is third at 5-over, and Copiah-Lincoln is fourth at 7-over.

 

The final round is scheduled for Sunday. The top four teams, plus Region 23 Tournament host Jones, advance.
