Gulf Coast in second after first round

Mississippi Gulf Coast trails host Meridian by two shots after the first round of the fifth MACJC event of the season at Briarwood Country Club.

The Bulldogs have three golfers in the top seven, led by George Kawell. His 1-under 71 left him three shots behind leader Ryan Desormeaux of Copiah-Lincoln. East Mississippi's Steven Eilders is in second at 2-under.

Grant Motter is tied for fourth at even, with Connor Crabbe, playing as an individual, tied for sixth at 1-over.

Meridian's 7-over 295 leads the pack. Gulf Coast shot a 297, followed by East Mississippi (299) and Co-Lin (300).

The event tees off the final round at 8 a.m. Tuesday.
