Gulf Coast finishes in third-place tie at Spring Fling

George Kawell shot 1-under in the final round of the Ron Marshall Spring Fling Tournament on Saturday, finishing tied for fourth among individuals, and helping lead Gulf Coast to a third-place tied in the team standings.

Kawell shot an even-par 216 at the event, a preview for this season's NJCAA tournament. Grant Motter finished two shots back, tied for sixth. Andreas Tancred of Andrew College (Cuthbert, Ga.) won medalist after a final-round 67 propelled him to 4-under.

"It was a good finish at the preview with freshmen in the top 10," MGCCC coach Tommy Snell said. "We had a chance to win it all, and we can build on that between now and May."

Gulf Coast tied at 20-over with Darton State (Albany, Ga.). Mesa (Ariz.) CC won the event at 7-over. Tyler (Texas) JC was second at plus-16.

The event featured four of the top five teams in the latest Golfstat rankings – second-ranked Mesa, third-ranked Darton and the fourth-ranked Bulldogs. Tyler was ranked fifth.

"We know we have to work hard to beat Mesa and Tyler," said Snell.

Danny De Los Santos finished tied for 33rd at 10-over. Phillip Hickam (plus-13) was tied for 45, and Conner Entriken (plus-14) was tied for 48th.
