MGCCC pushes win streak to 4

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast won the second half against Hinds, and in turn extended its winning streak to four games with a 2-1 victory Friday night at Bary Thrash Field.

"It's positive anytime you get a win against Hinds. They're a good program and have won as many state titles as anybody. I'll take that. We looked like a team that had played its fourth game in a week. We get one more chance to line up and get sharp, and then we start playing for real again."

Peyton Younger (So., West Harrison/Gulfport) scored his first goal of the year in the 62nd minute, set up by Griffin Bush with a pass right along the penalty spot to break the tie.

Hinds (4-3-1) scored in the 20th minute before Brandon Marquez (Fr., Petal/Petal) evened it up on an assist from James Redmond (Fr., Oberschule Roter Sand/Bremen, Germany). The play broke from a throw-in on the left wing, with Redmond freeing Marquez up for a blast from inside the 18-yard box.

Gulf Coast (7-3) had played games in North Mississippi on Saturday and Sunday, then another on Wednesday night. They'll head to Decatur on Tuesday to play East Central in a game scheduled to start at 4 p.m. before their schedule opens up ahead of South Division play.

"I think the week will help," Handy said. "We haven't been able to train for basically a week, so to have that time off to really sharpen up. There's some things we can clean up and get us ready for the division games."
