Bulldogs put up a five-spot on Andrew

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast cruised to its first win of the men's soccer season Friday night, beating Andrew College 5-0 at Bary Thrash Field.

Victor Moerck (Fr., Vaerloese, Denmark/Lyngby Handelsgymnasium) scored the first and last goals to lead the Bulldogs to a 1-1-1 record.

"The main thing is we got a shutout," Gulf Coast coach Chris Handy said. "We've been giving up too many goals, so that's a positive. Everyone got to play, and we continued to play hard, which is a theme for us."

Gulf Coast had lost a tough road match to NJCAA Division II No. 6 Tyler, and gotten a non-conference draw at No. 5 Jones to open the season. The season-opener at Perk got off to an explosive start, with the Bulldogs scoring three times in a six-minute span.

Guy Mizrachi (Fr., Haifa, Israel/Ironi Nesher) delivered a perfect corner that Moerck headed home in the 18th minute. Three minutes later, Kade Smith (Fr., London, England/Whitmore) scored his third goal in two games by pouncing on a cross the Tigers keeper spilled.

Bryon Shepard (Fr., Gulfport/St. Patrick) got his first of the season from distance, hammering a ball home from 30 yards out. It staked the Bulldogs to a 3-0 lead at halftime.

Zach McWillie (So., Jackson/Murrah) poked in his first goal in the 55th minute. Jeongbin Kim (Fr., Paju, Korea/Anyang Technical) put a dangerous corner into the 6-yard box that McWillie nudged in.

"Zach continues to show maturity and progress," Handy said. "I'm proud of the player he's become."

Smith sent Moerck in with a penetrating pass in the 60th minute for the final score. The Danish freshman now has three goals.

"He puts himself in dangerous positions," Handy said. "He does that with his effort. It's an asset for the team."

Gulf Coast returns to action at Perk on Tuesday when Southwest Mississippi visits for a non-conference game. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
