No. 16 Gulf Coast blanks Holmes 8-0

PERKINSTON — After a scoreless first 45 minutes, No. 16 Mississippi Gulf Coast unleashed a blizzard of eight goals after the break to beat Holmes by that margin at Bary Thrash Field.

Kade Smith (Fr., London, England/Whitmore) and Victor Moerck (Fr., Vaerloese, Denmark/Lyngby Handelsgymnasium) scored twice for Gulf Coast. Mason Shortt (Fr., Brandon/Northwest Rankin) and Bryon Shepard (Fr., Gulfport/St. Patrick) had two assists each.

"In the end, that's a really weird game," Gulf Coast coach Chris Handy said. "To go 0-0 at the half and 8-0 in the second half, I'm not sure how much we can take for it. But we're still on track for our goals."

Gulf Coast (8-1-2) has won seven straight and all six MACCC games.

The Bulldogs didn't get their first goal until the 50th minute, but unleashed all of them in the next 20. Holmes went down to 10 men in the 53rd minute after a red card made their task even tougher.

Francisco Cruz-Lopez (So., Southhaven/Southaven) scored his first goal of the season. Donovan Allen (Fr., Byram/Terry), Jeongbin Kim (Fr., Paju, Korea/Anyang Technical) and Mills Sheridan (Fr., Brandon/Northwest Rankin) also netted markers. Moerck, Kim and Hayden Thomas (Fr., Clinton/Clinton) had assists.

"It's always a positive when you can play a lot of people," Handy said. "Again, you want to reward the guys for coming in and training hard. The fact that we got to reward a bunch of people today was great."

Holmes is now 3-7, 0-6.

Gulf Coast is back in action Friday when East Mississippi visits. Sophomore Night ceremonies will take place between games, with the men scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m.
