Ruiz Ospina earns NJCAA Keeper of the Week

PERKINSTON — No. 17 Mississippi Gulf Coast has a big man in goal who stops almost everything he sees, but nobody could stop him from picking up a national award Wednesday.

David Ruiz Ospina won NJCAA Keeper of the Week in Division II for his efforts for the Bulldogs, who moved up to No. 17 in the rankings.

The freshman from Manizales, Colombia kept the archrival Pearl River at bay in earning a 4-1 win in Poplarville. He made five saves in the Bulldogs' conference opener.

He ranks second in the league in shutouts, and he'll be back out there Friday night when Meridian visits Bary Thrash Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., with tickets available at http://mgcccbulldogs.com/tickets. The game will be streamed at https://mgcccbulldogs.com/watch.

Ruiz Ospina is the first men's soccer player to earn an NJCAA award this season.
