PERKINSTON — No. 17 Mississippi Gulf Coast extended its win streak to four games Friday by scoring all their goals against Meridian in a 4-0 win in the final 20 minutes at Bary Thrash Field.
The Bulldogs, who are 3-0 in MACCC men's soccer action, were bottled up in midfield most of the night, but the dam finally burst late.
"I think Meridian got a little bit tired," Gulf Coast coach Chris Handy said. "I'm not sure we got much better (late), but in the end, it's a tough league. We'll take our three points, we'll take our shutout, and we'll move on."
Gulf Coast (5-1-2) is one of two teams unbeaten and untied through three games in the MACCC. Itawamba pounded Holmes 9-0 Friday to join the Bulldogs atop the standings.
Kade Smith (Fr., London, England/Whitmore) got his fifth goal in the 74th minute to open the scoring. Terron McIntyre (So., Madison/Madison Central) hit a corner into the 6-yard box that Zach McWillie (So., Jackson/Murrah) nodded back across the face of goal. Smith was there to head it home.
Seven minutes later, Nygel Jobe (Fr., Brandon/Brandon) got to the endline and cut a pass back for Victor Moerck (Fr., Vaerloese, Denmark/Lyngby Handelsgymnasium). He deftly touched it past the keeper for 2-0.
Moerck was on the end of a movement following a Meridian turnover two minutes later. It was his eighth goal of the season and fifth in three games.
Guy Mizrachi (Fr., Haifa, Israel/Ironi Nesher) scored penalty with 15 seconds left for the final margin.
"We've won 4-1, 4-1, 4-1, so 4-0 would be an improvement," Handy said. "But we've still got to get better. We've got big goals, and I don't think we're there yet."
Gulf Coast will make the long trip to play Northwest Mississippi in Senatobia on Tuesday. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
