Bulldogs, Miller claim first victory

Mississippi Gulf Coast cruised to an easy victory in the first game of the men's basketball season and the first game of Coach Owen Miller's collegiate coaching career. The Bulldogs beat Chattahoochee Valley 99-82 in Poplarville.

"We played OK," Miller said. "We got out to a big lead. At times our defense was really good, and at times it was really bad. Offensively, we scored a bunch of points."

Kaue Kalinowski (Fr., Curitiba Brazil/Divine Savior) made five 3-pointers and led Gulf Coast with 19 points. Jabarie Robinson (So., Raymond/Raymond) had 16 points, and Duran Parish (Fr., Biloxi/Biloxi) had 13.

The Bulldogs led by more than 30 points in the second half, but things got sloppy down the stretch.

Miller expects his team's depth to be a strength this year. He had eight different players score eight or more points.

"I think that's going to bode well for us," he said. "We got a lot of the same kinds of guys. (Omarion Smith) got two quick fouls and didn't play a whole lot. We got a lot of production from a lot of guys."

Gulf Coast will play Enterprise State on Saturday at 11 a.m. The Bulldogs will open their home schedule Thursday when Jones visits Dantzler Arena. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
