PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast lost its men's basketball home opener Thursday night, falling 86-77 to MACCC rival Jones at Dantzler Arena.
It was a non-conference matchup, and the Bulldogs fall to 2-1.
Javeon Gordon (So., Mount Olive/Mount Olive) had 18 points to lead Gulf Coast. His defensive pressure helped his squad cut a 16-point deficit with 6:29 to play down to five with 89 seconds left. The Bulldogs wouldn't get any closer.
Omarion Smith (So., Atlanta Ga./Douglas County) had 13 points, and John Davis (So., Pascagoula/Pascagoula) and Duran Parish (Fr., Biloxi/Biloxi) had 11 each.
Jones is now 4-1 and has won six straight in the rivalry.
Gulf Coast returns to action Tuesday with a trip to play at Pensacola State. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. The Bulldogs will play three more road games after that before returning for a three-game homestand before the holiday break. The William Carey JV will visit Perk at 7:30 p.m.
