14-hit effort gets MGCCC a split

Mississippi Gulf Coast bounced back from a defeat in the Bulldogs' opener at the Sun Chief Classic on Friday to beat Shelton State 12-4 in five innings Friday.

Northwest Florida State beat Gulf Coast 9-1 in five innings earlier in the day.

The Bulldogs (6-4) gave up three runs to the Bucs in the first inning to trail 3-1, but they added a run in the second and two in the third to take the lead for good.

Gulf Coast got four runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. K.K. Agner (So., Horn Lake/Magnolia Heights) drove in three runs with two hits. Breanna Green (So., Saraland Ala./Saraland), Jett Harrell (Fr., Clarksdale/Lee Academy), Madisyn Cobbs (So., Oxford/Lafayette), Laurel Ladner (So., Long Beach/Long Beach) and Abby Vance (So., Calhoun City/Calhoun City) also had two hits.

Ladner's triple and Vance's double were the Bulldogs' only extra-base hits. Gulf Coast finished with 14 hits.

Harrell got the win on the mound with a complete game and is now 4-0. It was her second complete game.

Gulf Coast will play Snead State at 3:45 p.m. Saturday on the second day of Coastal Alabama-South's tournament in Gulf Shores, Ala. The Bulldogs play Chattanooga State at 6 p.m.
