Bulldogs battle back twice for road sweep

Mississippi Gulf Coast softball coach David Kuhn said one word summed up the Bulldogs' Saturday at Scooba: Hard.

Gulf Coast (25-15, 8-6 MACCC) pulled out two late comeback wins to beat East Mississippi 6-4 in eight innings and 7-4.

"I told the girls today winning is hard, and losing is easy," Kuhn said. "It's even harder to win on the road. Things were really going our way, but they endured and somehow found a way to win."

Olivia Plummer (So., Gulfport/Gulfport) was the offensive star. She had two triples and two RBI in the first game and three doubles in the second game.

Gulf Coast trailed 4-3 headed to the seventh in the opener, but Kate Brannan (So., Enterprise/Enterprise) led off with a single and stole second. Jett Harrell (Fr., Clarksdale/Lee Academy) drove her in.

Plummer tripled in the go-ahead run in the eighth.

"Olivia Plummer, man," Kuhn said. "She was without a doubt the player of the day."

Brannan singled her in for insurance, and Abby Vance (So., Calhoun City/Calhoun City) finished off her 3.1 shutout innings of relief for the win. She gave up just two hits and struck out four.

Breanna Green (So., Saraland Ala./Saraland) also had two hits, and Kamryn LaFosse (Fr., Lake Charles, La./Sam Houston) doubled.

East Mississippi (11-23, 8-6) scored three times in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead in the second game. Harrell drove in Brannan to tie in in the sixth, then scored on LaFosse's bunt.

Plummer doubled in one insurance run in the seventh, and Brannan padded the lead by driving in Plummer with a single. Brannan had three hits and finished 5-for-8 on the day.

Harrell had two hits, and got the win in the circle to improve to 11-5.

"I'm just proud of the way they endured, stayed even-keeled and came back today," Kuhn said. "To come back and win and to come back and win again was great."

Gulf Coast returns home on Tuesday to play East Central. First pitch at Ross-Smith Field is set for 3 p.m. The games will be streamed at https://mgcccbulldogs.com/watch.
