Gulf Coast swamps Meridian

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast softball coach David Kuhn keeps notes on his scorecard during games so he can talk about them with the team after the game.

After the second game of a sweep of Meridian, he pulled the card out of his pocket and showed it to them. Completely clean.

"Usually during a game, if we make a mental mistake or a play that hurts us or could come back to haunt us, I'll write something down," he said. "Tonight, the card was blank on both sides which means we played a danged-near flawless game."

Gulf Coast (35-17, 18-8 MACCC) beat Meridian 11-5 in the first game and needed just five innings to close out the sweep with a 16-2 win at Ross-Smith Field. Breanna Green (So., Saraland Ala./Saraland) was the hot hitter, going 6-for-7 with a double, a triple and eight RBI.

"I've been working really hard for my team," the second baseman said. "It's awesome because we've been winning a lot playing against really good competition. I'm just glad we worked really hard today and got the win."

Gulf Coast has now won 12 of its last 14, and the Bulldogs moved past Itawamba into the important fifth spot in the conference standings. That would give them the first day off at the Region 23 Tournament in two weeks.

Gulf Coast will close out the regular season and celebrate Sophomore Day on Friday during a doubleheader against Northeast Mississippi. The doubleheader will start at 2 p.m. and be streamed at https://mgcccbulldogs.com/watch.

Itawamba finishes with Jones and Copiah-Lincoln.

Green went 3-for-3 with five RBI in the opener. Jorja Roberson (Fr., Branyan/East Union), Jett Harrell (Fr., Clarksdale/Lee Academy) and Kate Brannan (So., Enterprise/Enterprise) had two hits each. Harrell went the distance in the circle and improved to 16-5.

Green went 3-for-4 with three more RBI in the second game. Olivia Plummer (So., Gulfport/Gulfport) homered and had three hits, and Abby Vance (So., Calhoun City/Calhoun City) also had three hits, with a double and a triple.

Kylie Burnette (Fr., Picayune/Picayune) threw a four-hitter to improve to 11-4.
