Sophomore Day has important seeding implications

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast will close out its regular season Friday with Sophomore Day, but the games against Northeast Mississippi will also be important for playoff reasons.

The doubleheader will start at 2 p.m. at Ross-Smith Field. The games will be streamed at https://mgcccbulldogs.com/watch. Sophomore Day ceremonies will take place immediately following Game 1.

Gulf Coast is one of the hottest teams in the league, having won 12 of its last 14 games. If the Bulldogs sweep Northeast, they'd likely lock up fifth place in the MACCC standings and avoid playing on the first day of the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament. It will be played at the MACCC champion's field May 9-14.

The playoff picture is complicated, with three teams vying for the championship and four teams fighting for spots four through seven. Gulf Coast will be the only team in the state whose regular season is over at the end of Friday's action, which was the scheduled end of the season. Rainouts have makeup games scheduled for Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday.

Northeast, which was ranked as high as eighth in the country and is still receiving votes in the NJCAA poll, has won three in a row, breaking a stretch where the Tigers had lost four of five.

Records

  • MGCCC: 35-17/18-8 MACCC, 5th place in conference
  • Northeast Mississippi: 38-10/16-8 MACCC, T-6th place in conference

Last Time Out

  • MGCCC swept Meridian at Perk on Tuesday, winning 11-5 and 16-2 in five innings.
  • Northeast swept Mississippi Delta 4-1 and 8-0 in five innings on Tuesday in Booneville.

Previous Meeting

On March 10, 2022, Gulf Coast and Northeast split a doubleheader in Booneville. The Tigers won the first game 5-0 before the Bulldogs rallied for a 7-1 win.
