Bulldogs jump to 5th after sweep

Mississippi Gulf Coast came from behind twice more Tuesday, sweeping Hinds at Raymond to move into fifth place in the MACCC softball standings.
Jorja Roberson (Fr., Branyan/East Union) hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning of Game 1 to lift the Bulldogs to a 5-4 win. Breanna Green (So., Saraland Ala./Saraland) hit a two-run double in the fifth to tie up the second game before Natalie Shaw (Fr., Olive Branch/Marshall Academy) put the Bulldogs ahead with an RBI single on the way to a 6-4 victory.
"They have a lot of fight, a lot of poise, a lot of resilience," Gulf Coast coach David Kuhn said. "There's a lot of different people stepping up at different times. It's been fun to watch the last few weeks, to see them come back."
Gulf Coast (32-16, 15-7 MACCC) has won nine of its last 10. They leapfrogged Northeast Mississippi, which split at Holmes.
Jett Harrell (Fr., Clarksdale/Lee Academy) struck out 10 in the opener to improve to 15-5 and got the last two outs in the nightcap for her second save. Kennedy Brown (So., Southaven/Northpoint Christian) improved to 4-3 with 3.1 innings of one-run ball. She allowed three hits.
"I was able to rest Abby (Vance) a little today," Kuhn said, "and the three-headed monster of (Kylie) Burnette, Brown and Jett did a great job."
Roberson had three hits, including that home run and a triple. Harrell had a pair of singles, one of which led off the seventh ahead of Roberson's bomb. Olivia Plummer (So., Gulfport/Gulfport) doubled in an important insurance run.
Green, Roberson and Plummer had two hits in the second game. Plummer had an RBI triple to score Shaw and make it 6-4.
Hinds falls to 9-27, 6-12.
Gulf Coast is on the road again Thursday to play No. 4 Northwest Mississippi. First pitch in Senatobia is set for 2 p.m., and the games will be streamed at https://nwccrangers.com/watch.
