Mississippi Gulf Coast softball coach David Kuhn reached the 800-win plateau Thursday when the Bulldogs swept Coahoma in Clarksdale.
"It means I've been doing this a long time. A long time," Kuhn said. "And I've been around a lot of good players and a lot of good coaches. I've been very blessed."
Gulf Coast won 8-0 and 14-2, with both games ending in five innings.
Jett Harrell (Fr., Clarksdale/Lee Academy) had a monster day, throwing a two-hitter in the opener and slugging two home runs with six RBI in the second game.
Gulf Coast is now 30-16 overall, 13-7 in MACCC play. The Bulldogs are in sixth place in the conference standings, with the top nine teams advancing to the postseason. They are a game behind Northeast Mississippi (12-4) and a game ahead of Itawamba (10-6).
Kuhn won 368 games in 10 years at NCAA Division II Delta State and 380 games in 12 years at NCAA Division I Central Arkansas. At both schools, he is the career wins leader. In two seasons at Gulf Coast, he's up to 51 wins and is 800-592 for his career.
The Bulldogs are off this weekend. They'll return to action Tuesday with a trip to Raymond. First pitch against Hinds will be at 3 p.m.
In the opener, Harrell struck out five batters without a walk. She also had two hits with a double.
"Jett threw it great," Kuhn said. "She had some big hits. She swung the bat well."
Breanna Green (So., Saraland Ala./Saraland) had two doubles, and Abby Vance (So., Calhoun City/Calhoun City) had two hits.
Harrell's six RBI are the most by a Bulldog this season, and the most by a Gulf Coast player since Rakeya Travis did it twice in 2021. She also doubled.
Jorja Roberson (Fr., Branyan/East Union) had two hits, including a double. K.K. Agner (So., Horn Lake/Magnolia Heights) also had two hits. Vance struck out four in 4.2 innings to improve to 2-2.
