Bulldogs break skid with sweep of Bears

Mississippi Gulf Coast got a much-needed MACCC softball sweep Tuesday at Southwest Mississippi, winning 4-2 and 8-0. The second game lasted just five innings.

"We played well," Gulf Coast coach David Kuhn said. "We played good defense most of the day. We had some good pitching, and we needed it. It seems like we hadn't won in forever."

The Bulldogs broke a six-game losing streak to improve to 21-13 overall, 4-4 in MACCC play.

Olivia Plummer (So., Gulfport/Gulfport) was the hitting hero on the day with a clutch RBI single in the first game, and she missed hitting for the cycle by a double in the second. She hit her second home run of the season in the second inning after Jorja Roberson (Fr., Branyan/East Union) had hit a solo homer of her own in the first inning.

Jett Harrell (Fr., Clarksdale/Lee Academy) got the win in the opener, going six innings and scattering eight hits. Kennedy Brown (So., Southaven/Northpoint Christian) got her third save after entering the seventh following a leadoff single.

Harrell is now 9-4.

Roberson had a two-run single in the fourth, and Plummer's hit in the fifth made it 4-1.

Kylie Burnette (Fr., Picayune/Picayune) threw a three-hitter in the second game, needing just 61 pitches for her first shutout of the season. She's 8-3.

"She did a good job of attacking hitters, and the defense played good behind her," Kuhn said. "We were able to put some runs on the board behind her early."

Harrell had three hits and three RBI. Roberson had two hits and two RBI.

Southwest is 10-16, 0-6.

Gulf Coast hosts Holmes on Thursday. First pitch at Ross-Smith Field is set for 1 p.m. The games will be streamed at https://mgcccbulldogs.com/watch.
