Bulldog bats wake up to earn split

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast got shut out in the first game of its softball doubleheader, but the Bulldogs awakened their bats for the second game.

Gulf Coast exploded for 14 hits in the nightcap to win 13-5 over Baton Rouge in five innings. The Bears won the first game 5-0, holding Gulf Coast to three hits to break a seven-game win streak.

The Bulldogs were up 9-1 when BRCC broke through for four in the fifth. After Jett Harrell (Fr., Clarksdale/Lee Academy) singled in a run, Olivia Plummer (So., Gulfport/Gulfport) hit her first collegiate homer to make it 12-5. K.K. Agner (So., Horn Lake/Magnolia Heights) smashed her eighth tater of the year to end it.

Harrell had three hits, including a pair of doubles, and two RBI. Kamryn LaFosse (Fr., Lake Charles, La./Sam Houston) had a three-run homer in the fourth and finished with two hits. Breanna Green (So., Saraland Ala./Saraland) had two hits with a double. Kate Brannan (So., Enterprise/Enterprise) had a triple among her two hits.

Kylie Burnette (Fr., Picayune/Picayune) picked up the win in the second game, pitching into the fifth. She struck out two and didn't walk anybody.

The Bulldogs (15-7) had built their winning streak on good defense and aggressive baserunning. The gloves deserted them, resulting in four errors, and they made outs on the basepaths. Baton Rouge (3-15) only had one earned run in its five-run sixth.

Gulf Coast is back in action at Ross-Smith Field on Wednesday when Lansing visits. The first game starts at 4 p.m., and the games will be streamed at https://mgcccbulldogs.com/watch
