Pitching dominates Bulldogs’ split with No. 11 PRCC

PERKINSTON — Pitching and defense dominated a rivalry Tuesday at Ross-Smith Field, with Mississippi Gulf Coast earning a split against No. 11 Pearl River.

Jett Harrell hurled a four-hitter to beat the Wildcats 1-0 in the opener, with Laurel Ladner's double supplying all the offense. PRCC won the second game 2-1.

"Both teams pitched really, really well," Gulf Coast coach David Kuhn said. "One big hit in both games was the difference."

Gulf Coast is now 28-16, 11-7 in MACCC. Pearl River is 30-9, 14-4. The Bulldogs will travel Wednesday for a Thursday doubleheader against Coahoma. First pitch is set for noon.

Kuhn now has 798 career coaching wins, so he's in position to get 800 at Clarksdale with a sweep.

A two-out, fourth-inning rally produced the only run of Game 1. Olivia Plummer (So., Gulfport/Gulfport) singled to left, and Ladner followed with a double over the right fielder's head.

"She made a really good adjustment and put a ball in play," Kuhn said. "It was big. Very timely."

That was all Jett Harrell (Fr., Clarksdale/Lee Academy) needed. She struck out six while walking one to improve to 13-5.

Pearl River loaded the bases in the first inning and had one other runner in scoring position, but Harrell retired the final 10 batters she faced.

Gulf Coast took the lead in the second game after a couple of two-out walks, two wild pitches and a passed ball.

Pearl River got a two-run homer off starter Abby Vance (So., Calhoun City/Calhoun City) after a one-out error. She allowed just three hits in four innings of work, and Kylie Burnette (Fr., Picayune/Picayune) came in for the final three innings after a 30-minute lightning delay.

Gulf Coast had a runner at second with one out when the delay hit, but the Bulldogs could get the runner past third. They didn't manage a hit in the second game.

"They've got a really good team with really good pitching," Kuhn said. "Our pitching staff did great. We played solid defense. Either team could have won both; either team could have lost both. I'm not disappointed."
