Bulldogs sweep Stars

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast made quick work of Lansing on Wednesday night, sweeping a softball doubleheader in about three hours.

The Bulldogs needed just five innings to win the first game 11-0, and they played a brisk game to win the nightcap 5-2. Jett Harrell (Fr., Clarksdale/Lee Academy) threw a two-hitter followed by a four-hitter by Kylie Burnette (Fr., Picayune/Picayune).

"It was two really strong pitching performances by Jett and Kylie," Gulf Coast coach David Kuhn said. "I thought we played great defense all day long. Olivia Plummer was the hitter of the games. She had great at-bats all night long. I was pleased. We played really well tonight."

Gulf Coast improved 17-7 with the sweep, its last games before conference play starts Friday. Mississippi Delta visits Ross-Smith Field for a 2 p.m. start on Military + First Responders Appreciation Day. That personnel will get admitted for free and there will be a pregame ceremony at 1:35.

Plummer (So., Gulfport/Gulfport) was 5-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI. Laurel Ladner (So., Long Beach/Long Beach) went 3-for-4 with a double, three RBI and her first collegiate home run.

Harrell, who had four hits with a double in the doubleheader, struck out four to improve to 7-3, while Burnette sat down five without a walk and is now 6-2.

Lansing is now 1-10.
