No. 17 Gulf Coast wins third straight

No. 17 Mississippi Gulf Coast moved to 3-0 on the season with a 68-64 win at Meridian on Tuesday.

The Bulldogs led by double-digits in the fourth quarter, but a series of turnovers let the Eagles (2-1) back in the game.

"Overall, we played well, especially having three young point guards," Gulf Coast coach Hope Adams said. "Being on the road for the first time against a conference opponent, they were getting acclimated to what this conference is going to be: gritty, fast, athletic teams that never stop coming. We were able to close out the game, and they handled the adversity of being on the road and the crowd throughout the game."

Dekyra Mitchell (Fr., Durant/Holmes County) led Gulf Coast with 25 points. Taelar Felton (Fr., Clinton/Clinton) had 15 points for her third straight in double figures.

Nine different Bulldogs scored, and Mitchell led her team with five 3-pointers.

"We were able to get it figured out and swing that ball on her side after we got the zone shifted," Adams said. "She was able to knock down big buckets when we needed them."

Mitchell had a big steal for a layup with 70 seconds left that gave the Bulldogs a 66-60 lead. Kristen McMillan (So., Hoover, Ala./Hoover) got a bucket in the lane with 20 seconds left to restore a six-point lead.

Gulf Coast makes the short trip to Poplarville later this week to play in the Pearl River Classic. The Bulldogs play Chattahoochee Valley on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and Mineral Area on Friday at 3 p.m.
