Mitchell pours in 10 treys to beat Jones
PERKINSTON — Dekyra Mitchell rained 3-pointers on Jones on Monday, leading Mississippi Gulf Coast to a 71-47 win at Dantzler Arena.
The freshman guard from Durant finished with 30, all from behind the arc, and the Bulldogs made a living back there all game. They led 33-27 at halftime, with all 11 buckets coming from deep.
"Mitchell over the last two games has been dynamic from behind the arc," Gulf Coast coach Hope Adams said. "Her game just continues to evolve. With them in that 1-3-1 zone, her being able to knock down those shots and carry us is the difference in the game."
Gulf Coast improved to 9-6, 3-0 MACCC. They were outstanding from deep to bust that zone.
Mitchell had the first five buckets for the Bulldogs in the second quarter, helping them break a 15-all tie. Gulf Coast didn't make a 2-point field goal until almost two minutes were gone in the third quarter.
Allison Irby (Fr., Olive Branch/Lewisburg) got a rebound, put it back in and got fouled for an old-fashioned three-point play. She added a 3 in the final minute of the quarter to put Gulf Coast up by 12. She finished with 11.
Gulf Coast outscored the Bobcats 18-4 to start the final period and put the game away.
Kristen McMillan (So., Hoover, Ala./Hoover) had 10 points.
"She took some big charges," Adams said. "I told her after the game that's what we need. She responded because as a sophomore, we have high expectations for her. We expect some leadership from the floor. She can be a force down the stretch with us trying to defend our title."
Jones is 3-16, 0-3.
Gulf Coast travels to Mississippi Delta on Thursday. Tipoff in Moorhead is at 5:30 p.m.
