Bulldogs explode past Dolphins

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast's slow start Tuesday was quickly erased by a dominant second quarter, with the Bulldogs pulling away for a 71-33 win over Delgado on Monday at Dantzler Arena.

Gulf Coast outscored the Dolphins 26-2 in the second quarter. Simaru Fields (So., Pass Christian/Gulfport) had 12 of her team-high 18 in the quarter, including three 3-pointers.

"We started doing what we've been working on, which is ball movement," Gulf Coast coach Hope Adams said. "We've got to make sure we've got ball reversals and are setting each other up for really good shots. That's going to help us against better teams."

Ja'Sharreah Hunt (So., Roxie/Franklin County) had 11 points, and Jacylin Houston (Fr., Louisville/Louisville) and Kelviana Parhm (Fr., Forest/Forest) each had 10.

The Bulldogs only managed five points in the opening 10 minutes, but their defense made it only a four-point deficit. They were much more effective producing points off turnovers as the game wore on.

"We are a defensive team, and our defense creates our offense," Adams said. "Once we got a couple steals and layups, that's when we see the rim. Our defensive intensity went up in that second quarter, and that helped our offense."

Gulf Coast led 31-11 at the break and only allowed eight points in the third quarter to further expand the lead.

It was the Bulldogs' last game before Thanksgiving, and the team will get some much-needed downtime.

"We have some players who haven't been home since August, so this will be a little refresher for us," Adams said. "We'll be back Saturday to prepare to go to Pensacola on Tuesday. Hopefully, everybody will reboot and come in ready to roll."

Gulf Coast plays at Pensacola State on Nov. 28. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. The Bulldogs will play back at Perk on Nov. 30 when Tallahassee visits for a 5:30 tip.
