Bulldogs move to 5-0 in MACCC

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast stayed undefeated in MACCC women's basketball play with a 57-49 win over a persistent Mississippi Delta team Thursday at Dantzler Arena.

The Bulldogs (12-3, 5-0 MACCC), who top the conference standings, led by as many as 21 in the third quarter, then had to hold on late.

"I asked the ladies in the locker room who ran out of gas," Gulf Coast coach Hope Adams said. "The first half, we were all over them defensively. We wanted to hit them in the mouth first, but we ran out of gas."

Tytiana Buckley (So., Meridian/Meridian) had a critical drive for a bucket when the Trojans (12-4, 2-2) had gotten the deficit down to six points with 8 minutes to play. She led the Bulldogs with 19 points, including 12 in the second quarter.

"She drove in there and got the layup, and that put us by eight," Adams said. "We've got to make our free throws. The last few games, I'm not pleased with that. If we make our free throws, that pushes the lead back out. We're not making them like we should."

Gulf Coast made just 7 of 16 from the charity stripe.

Simaru Fields (So., Pass Christian/Gulfport) scored 12 of her 16 points in the first quarter, raining four 3-pointers in the first 10 minutes. Je'Mya Evans (So., Gulfport/Harrison Central) had 15 points.

Gulf Coast travels to Booneville on Monday to play Northeast Mississippi. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. The game will be streamed at https://nemcctv.com/blackchannel/.
