Bulldogs blow out Greyhounds

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast scored the game's first eight points Thursday night and never looked back, pulling away from Arkansas State Mid-South 89-47 at Dantzler Arena.

Five different players scored in double digits for the Bulldogs, and two players saw their first action of the season. Simaru Fields (So., Pass Christian/Gulfport) scored 16 points in the second quarter on the way to a team-high 22.

"I think we were a little sluggish and not at our best," Gulf Coast coach Hope Adams said. "I was really surprised we scored 89 points in the first game back. We've got to find our rhythm because we've got a tough opponent coming up Saturday. We've got to make a quick turnaround."

The Bulldogs (6-2) travel to Marianna, Fla., to play 19th-ranked Chipola. The Indians won the first meeting between the teams 67-53 at Perk in November.

Ja'Sharreah Hunt (So., Roxie/Franklin County) had 12 points, and Jacylin Houston (Fr., Louisville/Louisville) and Tytiana Buckley (So., Meridian/Meridian) had 11 each. Je'Mya Evans (So., Gulfport/Harrison Central) added 10.

Gulf Coast was up 24-6 after the first period and led by 28 at halftime.

Tamia Yates (Fr., Crystal Springs/Crystal Springs) and Myan Barthelemy (Fr., Loranger, La./Loranger) played for the first time this season, and each had six points.

"Yates is going to bring us some length," Adams said. "She's been out for about three months, and once Coach (Carla) Bartee gets her back in the gym with some individual training, she's going to be a big factor. Myan is showing exactly what I thought she could be for us, a facilitator. She can't be sped up or slowed down, and the more reps she gets with us, she's going to bring a lot to our team."

ASU Mid-South is now 2-11.
