Hunt signs with Southeastern Louisiana

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast's star point guard Ja'Sharreah Hunt will be continuing her collegiate career at NCAA Division I Southeastern Louisiana.

Hunt has signed a letter of intent to play for the Lions following her sophomore season with the Bulldogs. The sophomore from Roxie will head over to Hammond next year.

"When I first got there, they treated me like family from the first time I got there to when I left," Hunt said. "They did everything right. I like their program, and they have a championship-oriented program."

Last year's Southeastern squad earned its first berth in the NCAA Tournament, finishing 21-10 with Southland Conference regular-season and tournament titles. The Lions' Ayla Guzzardo won SLC Coach of the Year. SLU lost in the NCAA first round to Iowa and Caitlin Clark.

Hunt averaged 8.1 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.1 assists as a freshman and earned a spot on the All-Region 23 Tournament Team. She picked up where she left off this season, averaging 9.4 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.7 assists.

She scored a career-high 20 points in Gulf Coast's last game, a 100-52 win over Tallahassee.

"She has been a huge asset to our program," Gulf Coast coach Hope Adams said. "When watching her in high school, we saw her potential and what she could be. I still think her best basketball is ahead of her. She's a very shift guard and really athletic. She does things with the ball equivalent to a male basketball player. I think Southeastern is getting a steal with her. She's gonna enhance their program. Hopefully, she can get a Region 23 championship here and leave that mark."

Hunt is excited to get back into action after the Christmas break. She said she's learned a lot on and off the court here at Perkinston.

"You have to earn it," she said. "Everything is mental, and you've got to embrace everything. Once you embrace everything, you can build a better team to win a championship."
